The neutralization of the laws of natural selection is an indisputable fact, not an opinion. By relatively simple mathematical calculations we could conclude that with the advent of ever more effective medicine, the proportion of human beings increasingly dependent on medicine will steadily increase. We are reaching a stage in the history of science where it will be theoretically possible to transform a species with hereditary modifications of the genome! Should we open the door to “genetically modified human beings”? It is easy to foresee the birth of a new era of eugenics. In this new framework, it will not be governmental institutions that will make the decisions, but the family itself. Leaving aside sex and the absence of genetic diseases, what characteristics will be desirable for parents? Intelligence? Artistic talent? Life expectancy? Body type? Beauty? Can we imagine, for example, that there will come a time in history when it will be fashionable to select babies carrying genomes with a high capacity for empathy? We are flirting with utopia! Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.
